# Fork & Spoon as a Crouton alternative

Crouton is a deep, Apple-only recipe manager with timers, a Watch app and meal planning. Here's what you trade if you need Android, a browser, or video import.

Crouton is one of the more serious recipe apps around. Multiple timers running at once, a Watch app, scaling, metric and imperial conversion, scanning ingredients off a printed page, and a meal planner that'll build a week from what you've already saved. Someone who cooks a lot built it for people who cook a lot.

It also runs only on Apple hardware, and that's what this page is really about.

> Features below were checked on 2 September 2026 against Crouton's own site, which doesn't publish prices. Check the App Store for what it costs today.

## The short version

**Stay with Crouton** if everything in your kitchen has an Apple logo on it, you want the deepest in-the-moment cooking features, and you'd rather not pay monthly.

**Look at Fork & Spoon** if someone you cook with is on Android, if you want the same account open in a browser, or if your recipes turn up as videos.

## What you actually give up

Being straight about it: if you move from Crouton to Fork & Spoon you lose things.

You lose the Watch app. You lose running three timers at once, which matters more than it sounds when you're doing a roast. You lose a native Mac app, in exchange for a browser version that's convenient but not as quick.

Those are real. If the hard part of your cooking life happens at the hob, Crouton is better equipped and you should stay.

## What you get

You get recipes that arrive as video. YouTube transcripts, Instagram and TikTok captions, all as a normal way in rather than something you work around by typing it out. That's the reason most people end up looking, and it's not something Crouton is trying to do.

You get to cook with someone who doesn't have an iPhone. A shared cookbook, week menu and shopping list that work between an iPhone and an Android phone at the same time, updating live. Plus a browser version, so someone can join without installing anything.

And you get a shopping list that's offline first and grouped by supermarket aisle, with the same ingredient across five recipes merged into one line before you go.

## The money

Crouton is cheaper over time. A one-time unlock, with a small optional subscription for the discovery feed and its AI import, against EUR 4.99 a month or EUR 49.99 a year here.

The reason Fork & Spoon can't be a one-time purchase is the import. Reading a video transcript and turning it into a structured recipe runs on a server and costs money every time somebody does it. Which is why saving, editing, organising and cooking your own recipes is free here with no limit, and import is the thing you pay for.

## Which to pick

Crouton if your kitchen is Apple and you want the best tools for the twenty minutes you're actually standing at the stove.

Here if the problem is getting the recipe into your collection in the first place, or if the person you cook with is on the wrong phone.

## Questions

**Does Crouton work on Android?**

No. It's iOS, iPadOS, macOS, visionOS and watchOS, so Apple devices only. If anyone you cook with is on Android, that's the end of the conversation.

**Is Crouton more capable in the kitchen?**

In several ways, yes. Multiple timers, a Watch app and its cook mode are genuinely good, and Fork & Spoon doesn't match all of that.

**Which one is cheaper?**

Crouton, over time. It's a one-time unlock with an optional small subscription on top, against a straight subscription here. Check their App Store listing for current prices.

**What can Fork & Spoon do that Crouton can't?**

Pull a recipe out of a YouTube video or an Instagram caption, share a cookbook between an iPhone and an Android phone at once, and run in a browser with nothing installed.
